Jiamini students have tremendous potential that is often held back by poverty. Our Tumaini (Hope in Swahili) students fearlessly tackle challenges like poverty, disrupted family lives, learning challenges, illness and disability. Some have already dropped out of school. Some never started. Others have left home and are living on the streets. Jiamini partners with the community to uplift the children most in need with scholarships, one on one tutoring, healthcare, and social support. We work with each child to define a unique path towards self-sufficiency that fits their needs.

Literacy

Many students slip through the cracks in overcrowded classrooms – passing from grade to grade without learning to read or write. Our literacy program combats this issue with a dedicated curriculum and personal tutoring – helping young ones catch up with their peers.

Better still, our literacy course is taught by Jiamini graduates who use the money they earn teaching to pay for college.

School Supply Kit

Basic school supplies are an insurmountable cost for many families. Sadly, this small barrier means the most impoverished students often don’t attend school. The kit gives a student everything she needs to attend school – two full school uniforms, shoes, a set of play clothes, a year’s supply of notebooks, writing utensils, math supplies, and of course, a backpack. All for $67!

Most of these supplies can be used for several years, and reused by younger siblings.

Girls’ Empowerment

Give a girl access to the knowledge she needs to set her own path. This gift will pay for a girl to attend our Empowerment Seminar, teaching girls about reproductive health, domestic rights, career pathways, and, most importantly, strengthening their sense of self-worth and independence. Every girl in the seminar receives a set of reusable menstrual pads, making sure she can attend school every day of the month.

Made by women in Newala, these pads also support local entrepreneurs.

Food Security

Many students eat only one meal a day, hindering their development and making it hard to focus in class. This is especially true in the dry season when family farms stop producing crops. With this Gift, you will supply a student and her family food for three months, freeing her from hunger so she can focus on school!
